CR059 is an innovative nucleic acid-based biologic therapy developed by The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Science and Technology for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It utilizes a circular RNA (circRNA) platform encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to deliver genetic instructions for the in vivo production of exenatide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Unlike traditional linear mRNA or protein-based therapies, the circular RNA technology is designed to provide enhanced stability and sustained expression of the therapeutic protein. CR059 is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial in China to assess its safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics in subjects with T2DM, representing a novel approach to managing metabolic diseases through RNA-based protein expression.
