Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cranberry beverage refers to drinks made primarily from cranberries, often consumed for their potential health benefits. Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are rich in antioxidants such as proanthocyanidins, which may help prevent bacteria like Escherichia coli from adhering to the urinary tract lining, potentially reducing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry beverages are commonly used as a dietary supplement rather than a pharmaceutical drug and have been traditionally used for urinary health support. They may also provide vitamins C and E and other phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. However, cranberry beverages are not approved by the FDA as treatments for any medical condition and should not replace prescribed medications. The mechanism of action is thought to involve inhibition of bacterial adhesion in the urinary tract but is not fully established scientifically.
