Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cranberry extract beverage is a liquid dietary supplement or functional food product made from the concentrated extract of cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon). It is most commonly promoted for reducing the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in healthy women. The mechanism is thought to involve proanthocyanidins in cranberries, which may inhibit the adhesion of certain bacteria (notably Escherichia coli) to the lining of the urinary tract, thereby reducing infection risk. The FDA allows qualified health claims stating that daily consumption of one serving (8 oz) may help reduce UTI recurrence risk in healthy women, but notes that evidence supporting this claim is limited and inconsistent[7][2]. Cranberry beverages are also consumed for general health benefits such as antioxidant support and potential cardiovascular benefits. They are not approved treatments for UTIs or other diseases and should not replace proven therapies[2][9].
