cranberry syrup

Cranberry syrup is an investigational botanical formulation consisting of glucose syrup containing 3% *Vaccinium macrocarpon* (cranberry) extract. Developed for pediatric use, it was primarily studied by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Spain for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in infants and children. The therapeutic mechanism of action involves the inhibition of p-fimbriated *Escherichia coli* adhesion to the uroepithelium, which prevents bacterial colonization and subsequent infection. In clinical trials, specifically ISRCTN16968287, the syrup demonstrated non-inferiority to prophylactic trimethoprim in children over one year of age and was found to be safe for use in infants as young as one month.
