It is designed to provide local anesthesia to the oropharyngeal mucosa to facilitate invasive procedures such as awake intubation or oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (gastroscopy). As a local anesthetic, its mechanism of action involves the reversible blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes. This inhibition prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby providing regional analgesia and suppressing the gag reflex, which improves patient comfort and procedural ease compared to traditional sprays or suspensions.
