Overview

Cre-encoding adenovirus (Ad-Cre) is a viral vector used primarily in research to achieve site-specific recombination in cells or tissues containing loxP-flanked (floxed) DNA sequences. It utilizes an adenoviral backbone (typically Ad5) to deliver the gene for Cre recombinase. Upon infection, the Cre protein is expressed and catalyzes the deletion, inversion, or translocation of DNA between two loxP sites. In the provided context, it was used to create a mouse model of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC)-associated renal cell carcinoma by inducing the loss of the *Tsc1* gene in the kidney. This system is a cornerstone of conditional gene knockout technology, allowing researchers to study the function of specific genes in a spatially and temporally controlled manner.
