Overview

Creatine is an amino acid derivative naturally found in vertebrate tissues, primarily in muscle and brain. It plays a key role in cellular energy metabolism by facilitating the recycling of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through the phosphocreatine system. In muscle tissue, creatine is stored as phosphocreatine, which rapidly donates phosphate groups to regenerate ATP during high-intensity, short-duration activities. Creatine supplementation increases intramuscular stores of phosphocreatine, enhancing performance and muscle mass during such exercises[1][6][8]. It is also used as a dietary supplement for potential benefits in certain neuromuscular and neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., muscular dystrophy, heart failure, Parkinson's disease), though its efficacy for these indications varies and it is not FDA-approved for any medical condition[3]. Creatine can be synthesized endogenously from amino acids or obtained from dietary sources like red meat and seafood; vegetarians may have lower baseline levels[1][6].
