Creatine isoleucinate is a newly synthesized creatine derivative investigated as an experimental antioxidant and neuroprotective small molecule. In isolated rat-brain synaptosome, mitochondrial, and microsomal oxidative-stress models, creatine derivatives including creatine isoleucinate showed protective effects under oxidative challenge that were proposed to involve reactive-oxygen-species scavenging, preservation of reduced glutathione, and membrane stabilization. In a separate two-week oral mouse study, creatine isoleucinate improved rotarod performance. It has been explored preclinically for potential relevance to oxidative-stress-associated neurodegenerative disease, particularly Parkinson's disease.
