Overview

Cresol is a small molecule aromatic organic compound used primarily as a disinfectant and antiseptic. It exists as three isomers (ortho-, meta-, and para-cresol), often found together in mixtures derived from coal tar or produced synthetically. Cresols are strong germicides effective at low concentrations and have been used in dental procedures to remove dental pulp. They are also utilized industrially as solvents, preservatives (including wood preservatives), intermediates for the synthesis of plastics, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, antioxidants (such as butylated hydroxytoluene), and other chemicals. The mechanism of action for its disinfectant properties involves disruption of microbial cell membranes and denaturation of proteins. Cresols are toxic at high concentrations by ingestion or dermal exposure; they can cause severe burns and systemic toxicity[1][4][6].
