Overview

Crest Whitening Emulsions is a commercially available over-the-counter dental whitening product developed by Procter & Gamble. The formulation consists of a semi-solid cohesive gel characterized by a high concentration of an inert hydrophobic phase (30% to 98% by weight) and a specialized emulsifying system. This system uses a combination of surfactants with varying hydrophilic-lipophilic balances (HLB) to stabilize active whitening agents, typically hydrogen peroxide, within a water-resistant base. This delivery mechanism allows the whitening agent to remain on the tooth surface for extended periods without the need for rinsing, strips, or trays. Beyond its primary use for dental aesthetics, the product has been clinically investigated for its potential to alleviate xerostomia (dry mouth) symptoms. This secondary effect is hypothesized to occur through the stimulation of taste buds by the gel's presence in the oral cavity, which promotes salivary flow, and through the lipid-based lubrication provided by the hydrophobic phase.
