cRGD-ZW800-1 is a zwitterionic near-infrared fluorescent peptide used as an imaging agent for cancer detection during surgery. It consists of a cyclic pentapeptide (cRGD) conjugated to the 800 nm NIR fluorophore ZW800-1. The cRGD moiety selectively binds to various integrins (including αVβ3, αVβ5) which are overexpressed on malignant cells and neoangiogenic vasculature. This binding allows real-time visualization of tumors during surgical procedures. The zwitterionic chemical structure and neutral charge of the compound reduce nonspecific uptake and background fluorescent signals, enhancing tumor-to-background contrast. The agent is rapidly eliminated through the kidneys after intravenous administration.
