Crinone

Crinone is a bioadhesive vaginal gel containing 8% natural progesterone, a small molecule hormone therapy. It is designed to provide a sustained release of progesterone directly to the vaginal mucosa, which then diffuses into the uterus. The primary mechanism of action involves acting as an agonist at the progesterone receptor, which helps maintain the uterine lining (endometrium) and reduces uterine contractility, thereby supporting pregnancy maintenance. While widely used in assisted reproductive technology (ART) for progesterone supplementation, it has been investigated in clinical trials, such as those conducted by The Baruch Padeh Medical Center, Poriya, for the prevention of recurrent preterm delivery in high-risk pregnant women. The drug was originally developed by Watson Pharmaceuticals and is currently part of the AbbVie product portfolio.
