**Crocetin** is a natural apocarotenoid dicarboxylic acid derived primarily from the flowers of saffron (Crocus sativus) and Gardenia jasminoides. Chemically, it is a carotenoid derivative with the formula C20H24O4, consisting of a polyene chain and two carboxylic acid groups. Crocetin exists as the aglycone (non-sugar) component of crocin, the principal pigment of saffron. Traditionally used in herbal medicine, crocetin has attracted modern research interest for its **antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anticancer, atherosclerotic, antidiabetic, memory-enhancing, and antiviral** properties. It acts mainly by inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis, influencing oxidative stress pathways, inducing apoptosis, and modulating gene expression related to inflammatory, cell growth, and atherogenic processes. Additionally, crocetin has been studied for its ability to enhance oxygen diffusivity in hypoxic tissues, potentially benefiting conditions like hemorrhagic shock and ischemic injury. Its pharmacological activities may involve inhibition of ERK 1/2 phosphorylation, modulation of cyclin D1 and p27kip1, and antagonism of the NMDA receptor. Poor oral bioavailability limits therapeutic applications, but novel formulations and derivatization are under development to address this.
