Crotalidae polyvalent immune fab is an antivenom composed of venom-specific Fab fragments derived from ovine (sheep) IgG antibodies. It is used to treat envenomation by North American pit vipers (Crotalinae), including rattlesnakes, cottonmouths/water moccasins, and copperheads. The drug works by binding and neutralizing venom toxins in the bloodstream, facilitating their redistribution away from target tissues and promoting their elimination from the body. The preparation involves immunizing sheep with venoms from several snake species (Crotalus atrox, Crotalus adamanteus, Crotalus scutulatus, Agkistrodon piscivorus), isolating the specific Fab antibody fragments after papain digestion of IgG, and combining them into a single product for broad-spectrum efficacy against multiple snake venoms[4][5][7][8]. It is indicated for use as soon as possible after signs of progressive envenomation appear.
