Crotalus atrox antivenin is a biologic drug consisting of purified immunoglobulin fragments (typically Fab or F(ab')2) derived from the plasma of sheep (ovine) that have been immunized with venom from the Western Diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). The preparation contains antibodies that specifically bind and neutralize toxins present in the venom, thereby preventing or reversing systemic toxicity following envenomation. The product is indicated for intravenous administration in adult and pediatric patients who have sustained bites from Crotalinae snakes, including rattlesnakes such as Crotalus atrox. It is produced by fractionating and purifying monospecific snake antivenins using chromatographic techniques[2][7]. CroFab, a commonly used brand, contains a mixture of Fab fragments targeting several North American pit viper venoms, including Crotalus atrox[6][7].
