Overview

Cryoprecipitate is a blood component derived from the cold-insoluble fraction of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) that precipitates when FFP is thawed at 1–6°C. It contains concentrated clotting factors, primarily fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, and factor XIII. Each unit typically contains at least 150 mg of fibrinogen and a minimum of 80 IU of factor VIII[4][5][8]. Cryoprecipitate is used to treat or prevent bleeding in patients with hypofibrinogenemia or dysfibrinogenemia (such as in major hemorrhage protocols), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), trauma-induced coagulopathy, and certain rare bleeding disorders when specific concentrates are unavailable[2][6][8]. It is not recommended as first-line therapy for hemophilia A or von Willebrand disease if recombinant or virus-inactivated products are available[3][6]. The product must be transfused within hours after thawing and cannot be refrozen once thawed[4].
