Cryoprecipitate Antihemophilic Factor (AHF) is a concentrated blood product derived from human plasma, specifically the cold-insoluble fraction of fresh frozen plasma. It contains high concentrations of essential clotting factors, including fibrinogen, Factor VIII, Factor XIII, and von Willebrand factor (vWF). It is primarily used as a hemostatic agent to treat or prevent bleeding in patients with hypofibrinogenemia, which can be congenital or acquired through conditions such as massive hemorrhage, trauma, or surgical procedures like liver transplantation. By replenishing fibrinogen, it enables the final step of the coagulation cascade—the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin—to form a stable blood clot. In the context of the FITS trial sponsored by the THOR Network, it serves as the standard-of-care comparator for evaluating concentrated fibrinogen complexes in bleeding liver transplant patients.
