Cryopreserved pooled platelets are an investigational blood product developed by Dr. Mariasanta Napolitano at the University of Palermo for the treatment of severe thrombocytopenia, particularly in patients with acute leukemia. The product consists of platelets derived from donor buffy coats that are pooled and cryopreserved with 6% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at -80°C using a modified Valeri method and a patented kit from Promedical. Unlike standard fresh platelets, which have a shelf life of only 5-7 days, these cryopreserved platelets can be stored for up to two years. Upon thawing, these platelets exhibit a "pre-activated" phenotype with increased surface expression of procoagulant markers such as phosphatidylserine, P-selectin (CD62P), and CD63. This enhanced hemostatic activity allows for rapid bleeding control and prophylaxis in patients with critically low platelet counts. The product was evaluated in the Phase 2 MICE study (NCT02032134).
