CryoSeal is a human plasma-derived fibrin sealant (fibrin glue) developed by Sanquin. It is a biologic product composed of two primary active components: cryoprecipitate (containing concentrated fibrinogen and other clotting factors) and thrombin. These components are derived from a single donor's unit of fresh frozen plasma using the automated CryoSeal FS System (CS-1). When applied topically during surgery, the thrombin component triggers the final step of the coagulation cascade by converting fibrinogen into fibrin, forming a stable clot that acts as a hemostatic sealant. CryoSeal has been clinically evaluated for the control of postoperative hemorrhage in procedures such as total knee replacement (the FIRST trial) and coronary artery bypass grafting (the FIBER study).
