Overview

This investigational treatment protocol, developed by Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China, combines percutaneous cryosurgery (cryoablation) with allogeneic natural killer (NK) cell immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). The procedure involves using an argon-helium cryosurgical system to physically destroy tumor tissue through extreme cold, which is intended to induce tumor necrosis and the release of tumor-associated antigens. This physical ablation is followed by the intravenous infusion of cultured allogeneic NK cells, a type of innate immune cell capable of direct cytotoxic activity against malignant cells. The combination aims to leverage the immediate tumor reduction from cryosurgery with a sustained immune response provided by adoptive cell transfer. This approach was evaluated in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT02843802) for patients who had failed standard therapies.
