Overview

Crystallized phenol + mesenchymal stem cell is an experimental combination therapy being investigated for the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease, particularly in pediatric patients. The therapeutic approach involves the application of crystallized phenol to the pilonidal sinus tract to act as a chemical cauterant, which ablates the epithelial lining and debris within the sinus. This chemical debridement is followed by the application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are utilized for their regenerative properties, primarily mediated through paracrine signaling; they secrete a variety of bioactive factors, cytokines, and growth factors that promote wound healing, modulate inflammation, and stimulate tissue repair. This specific combination and its clinical evaluation are part of a prospective randomized controlled trial led by Mustafa Azizoğlu to assess whether the addition of stem cell-based components improves healing outcomes compared to standard phenol treatment alone.
