Overview

CS19 is a fimbrial colonization factor (CF) expressed by Enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC), a major bacterial pathogen causing diarrheal illness, particularly in children in developing countries and travelers. This protein mediates the adhesion of ETEC to the host's intestinal epithelial cells, a critical step for establishing infection and subsequent toxin production. CS19 is recognized as a virulence factor and is being investigated as a potential antigen for the development of ETEC vaccines. CS19-expressing ETEC strains are also utilized in human and animal challenge models to study disease pathogenesis and evaluate vaccine candidates.
