CSPS toothpaste is an experimental desensitizing toothpaste developed by Haleon for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. The active ingredient is 5% calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS), a bioactive glass compound commercially known as NovaMin. When the toothpaste is applied to the teeth, the CSPS reacts with saliva to release calcium and phosphate ions, which precipitate to form a layer of hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) on the dentin surface. This HCA layer is chemically and structurally similar to natural tooth mineral and serves to physically occlude exposed dentinal tubules. By blocking these tubules, the toothpaste prevents external stimuli—such as thermal, tactile, or evaporative triggers—from reaching the nerves within the pulp, thereby providing relief from the sharp pain associated with dentin hypersensitivity. The formulation has been evaluated in randomized controlled clinical trials (e.g., NCT06378008) to confirm its clinical efficacy compared to standard fluoride toothpastes.
