Overview

Cu(SalNEt2)salicylate (also known as Cu-Sal) is a research-stage copper(II) chelate complex composed of a tridentate ONN-Schiff base ligand, N-(2-(diethylamino)ethyl)salicylidenaminato, combined with the anion of salicylate. Developed by researchers at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Symeonidion Research Center of the Theagenion Cancer Hospital in Greece, this small molecule compound has demonstrated potent cytotoxic activity against various human and murine cancer cell lines. In vitro studies have shown that Cu-Sal acts synergistically when combined with established chemotherapeutic agents such as bleomycin (BLM) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) against T47D human breast cancer cells. Theoretical quantum-chemical and molecular modeling studies suggest that its mechanism of action involves direct binding to DNA and RNA, leading to cellular damage and apoptosis. Currently, Cu-Sal remains in the preclinical research stage with no commercial developer or approved clinical indications.
