Overview

CU-40102 is a topical finasteride spray developed for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. It is the first and only topical finasteride product to have its New Drug Application (NDA) accepted by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China and submitted in Hong Kong. Unlike oral finasteride, which can cause systemic side effects, CU-40102 allows direct application to the scalp, maintaining high local drug concentration while minimizing systemic absorption and associated adverse effects. Finasteride acts as a competitive and specific inhibitor of Type II 5-alpha reductase, thereby inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is implicated in hair loss in androgenetic alopecia. Phase III clinical trials demonstrated significant efficacy in increasing total hair count and terminal hair count at 24 weeks compared to placebo, with favorable safety and local tolerability profiles[1][2][6][8].
