Cucumis melo var. makuwa leaf ethanolic extract (CML) is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the oriental melon, currently under investigation for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Research presented at the ADA 2026 conference indicates that CML provides a body weight-independent reduction in hepatic steatosis and inflammation. In preclinical models, CML administration led to significant decreases in liver weight, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and hepatic lipid accumulation (triglycerides and cholesterol). The extract's mechanism of action involves the suppression of inflammatory pathways, specifically IL-17 signaling and leukocyte migration, alongside a reduction in oxidative stress markers such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-). This research is supported by several South Korean governmental and research organizations, including the National Research Foundation of Korea.
