Cucumis sativus extract

Cucumis sativus (cucumber) extract is a botanical preparation investigated for its therapeutic properties, particularly in skincare. A cream containing 20% w/w Cucumis sativus extract was studied in a clinical trial (NCT02922244) for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced dermatitis in breast cancer patients. [1] The study found that while the cream did not prevent the onset of dermatitis during radiotherapy, it significantly aided in skin recovery one-month post-treatment, reducing dermatitis severity. [1] The therapeutic effects are attributed to cucumber's high water content, which provides moisturizing and soothing properties, and its rich composition of flavonoids and tannins. These compounds possess antioxidant and free radical-scavenging activities, which protect the skin from damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive carbonyl species (RCS). [4]
