Overview

Cultivated autologous limbal epithelial cells represent a cell therapy designed to treat limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition that can lead to corneal blindness. This therapy involves harvesting a small biopsy of limbal stem cells from a patient's healthy eye. These cells are then expanded ex vivo in a laboratory setting and subsequently transplanted onto the damaged corneal surface. The transplanted cells engraft and regenerate the corneal epithelium, thereby restoring the integrity and transparency of the cornea. This process also provides a continuous reservoir of new cells to replenish the corneal surface, effectively addressing the underlying cause of LSCD.
