Culture-expanded adipose-derived regenerative cells (ceADRCs), also frequently referred to as culture-expanded adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ceASCs), are an autologous cell therapy being developed by Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital) for the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia and hyposalivation. The therapy involves extracting a patient's own adipose tissue via liposuction, isolating the mesenchymal stem cells, and expanding them in a controlled laboratory environment to reach a therapeutic dose. These expanded cells are then injected directly into the submandibular salivary glands. The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through paracrine signaling, where the cells secrete a variety of growth factors and cytokines that promote angiogenesis, reduce chronic inflammation, and mitigate fibrosis in the radiation-damaged glandular tissue, thereby aiming to restore salivary gland function and improve the patient's quality of life.
