Overview

Cultured autologous keratinocytes are sheets of a patient's own skin cells (keratinocytes) that have been grown in laboratory conditions to form multilayered epithelium. The process involves harvesting a small skin biopsy from the patient, isolating the keratinocytes, and culturing them to produce sheets that can be grafted onto wound areas. This technique allows for significant expansion of the initial skin sample (approximately 1 cm² can produce around 1000 cm² of cultured epidermis in about two weeks), eliminating the need for painful donor sites in patients with extensive wounds.
