Overview

Cultured autologous keratinocytes, developed by the Association of Dutch Burn Centres, is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) designed for the treatment of acute full-thickness burn wounds. The therapy consists of a co-culture of the patient's own keratinocytes and melanocytes, which are expanded in vitro without the use of mouse feeder layers to eliminate xenogenic risks. In clinical application, these cells are typically seeded onto a collagen/elastin carrier and applied to the wound bed in combination with a meshed split-skin autograft. This approach aims to accelerate re-epithelialization, reduce the time to wound closure, and improve the long-term functional and aesthetic quality of the resulting scar compared to standard autografting alone.
