Cultured autologous mesenchymal cells is an investigational advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) consisting of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) expanded ex vivo. Developed by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid under the leadership of Prof. Enrique Gomez-Barrena, the therapy is designed to treat early-stage avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). The cells are administered via a single in situ injection into the necrotic area of the femoral head. The mechanism of action involves the promotion of bone healing and regeneration through the osteogenic differentiation of the MSCs into bone-forming cells and the paracrine secretion of growth factors that support tissue repair and revascularization.
