Cupric cation refers to the divalent form of the element copper (chemical symbol Cu^2+, also known as copper(II) or Cu(II)). It is a monoatomic dication and plays an essential biological role as a cofactor in various enzymatic processes. In medicine and nutrition, it is most commonly encountered as the active moiety in compounds such as cupric chloride or cupric sulfate. Clinically, it is used primarily as an additive in intravenous solutions for total parenteral nutrition to prevent or treat copper deficiency. The mechanism of action involves serving as a cofactor for enzymes involved in redox reactions and electron transport[1][2][5]. Excessive exposure can cause toxicity.
