Cupric chloride is an inorganic compound used as a source of copper in medical settings. It is primarily administered intravenously as a supplement to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions to maintain adequate serum copper levels and prevent deficiency in patients unable to obtain sufficient copper from oral intake[1][2][3][4][5]. Copper is an essential trace element that acts as a cofactor for numerous enzymes involved in energy production, connective tissue formation, and nervous and immune system function[5][6]. The mechanism of action involves providing bioavailable Cu²⁺ ions necessary for enzymatic processes. Cupric chloride injection should only be given after dilution due to its acidic pH[1]. It is not recommended for individuals with Wilson's disease due to the risk of copper overload[5].
