Overview

Curcuma caesia extract, derived from the rhizomes of the Black Turmeric plant, is a botanical substance rich in bioactive sesquiterpenes (such as germacrone and camphor) and curcuminoids. It is extensively researched for its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In the context of oncology, particularly breast cancer, the extract exhibits significant anti-proliferative effects by inducing programmed cell death. Its mechanism of action primarily involves the modulation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, characterized by the upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins like BAX and the downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-2, leading to the activation of the caspase cascade. Additionally, components of the extract have been shown to induce cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase. Although it is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for treating respiratory ailments and inflammation, it currently remains in the preclinical or early investigative stages for formal pharmaceutical applications in cancer therapy.
