Overview
Curcuma domestica extracts is an investigational botanical product developed by researchers at Mahidol University's Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The active component consists of curcuminoid extracts derived from the dried rhizomes of *Curcuma domestica* (turmeric), which are processed via ethanol extraction and subsequent removal of oil components to yield a standardized extract. In Phase 3 clinical trials, the extract demonstrated efficacy comparable to ibuprofen in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis, while exhibiting a superior gastrointestinal safety profile. Its mechanism of action is attributed to the anti-inflammatory properties of curcuminoids, which inhibit key inflammatory mediators including cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenase (LOX), and various pro-inflammatory cytokines.
