Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curcuma extract (brand name: Extracto de Cúrcuma Centrum) is an oral botanical drug developed by Especialidades Farmacéuticas Centrum S.A. It is a standardized dry extract of the *Curcuma longa L.* rhizome, containing curcuminoids such as curcumin. While approved in Spain for the treatment of functional digestive disorders of hepatobiliary origin, it has been investigated in Phase IV clinical trials for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. In the psoriasis context, it is used as a photosensitizer in combination with visible blue light phototherapy. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine pathways, specifically inhibiting Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-8 (IL-8), and suppressing keratinocyte proliferation.
