Overview

Curcuma longa extract is a botanical preparation derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa (turmeric), a plant in the Zingiberaceae family. It contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, primarily curcuminoids (including curcumin), turmerone oil, glycosides, terpenoids, and flavonoids[1][3][5]. The extract is widely recognized for its **antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic** properties[1][3][4][6]. Its mechanism of action is polypharmacological and includes inhibition of nuclear factor NF-κB, modulation of cytokine production (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, scavenging of reactive oxygen species, and activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ)[1][3]. Curcuma longa extract is used in traditional medicine systems for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, digestive disorders (IBS, dyspepsia, ulcerative colitis), arthritis, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer adjunctive therapy, liver diseases, and skin health[1][3][4][5][6]. It is commonly formulated as a dietary supplement (capsules, tablets, teas), as a culinary spice, or for topical use in skin conditions[2][3]. Poor oral bioavailability limits its systemic therapeutic effects, prompting the development of enhanced formulations and adjunct therapies[3]. Curcuma longa extract is certified as “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA for oral use[1].
