Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curcuma longa water extract is an **aqueous herbal extract** derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa (turmeric), a member of the Zingiberaceae family. Water extracts contain a different profile of bioactive compounds than alcohol extracts, notably containing water-soluble polysaccharides, glycosides, and some curcuminoids. Traditionally used in various medicinal systems, including Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Western herbal medicine, this extract is indicated for digestive complaints (dyspepsia, functional disorders of the gallbladder and liver), inflammation, oxidative stress-related diseases, and is under research for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), corneal wound healing, and as a hepatoprotective and antioxidant agent[1][2][3][4]. Mechanistically, the extract appears to act through multiple pathways, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, choleretic (stimulating bile secretion), inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO), downregulation of NF-κB activity, and modulation of cytokine production[2][3][4].
