Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curcuma xanthorrhiza oil is an essential (volatile) oil extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma xanthorrhiza, a plant in the ginger family commonly known as Javanese turmeric. The principal active components are sesquiterpenes (notably 44.5% xanthorrhizol), ar-curcumene, β-curcumene, and a small amount of camphor; it also contains 1–2% curcuminoids such as curcumin[1][5][6]. The main pharmacological activities attributed to this extract include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal), antihypertensive, antirheumatic, diuretic and cholagogic effects[1][2][4]. Mechanistically these effects are linked to inhibition of inflammatory mediators (e.g., via diarylheptanoids/curcuminoids), upregulation of tumor suppressor proteins like p53 by xanthorrhizol for anticancer activity[4], and increased bile secretion due to d-camphor content[1][2]. It is used primarily in skincare preparations but also appears in traditional medicine for digestive disorders and liver protection[3][7].
