Curcuma xanthorriza, commonly known as Temulawak or Javanese turmeric, is a botanical extract native to Indonesia. In dermatological research, a 10% cream formulation of the extract is being evaluated as a depigmentation agent for the treatment of epidermal-type melasma. Its therapeutic effect is mediated through the inhibition of the tyrosinase enzyme, which is essential for melanin synthesis, as well as the reduction of Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) transcription and the inhibition of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). These actions collectively reduce melanin production and improve skin brightness, offering a potential alternative to traditional treatments like hydroquinone.
