Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curcumin + ginkgo extract is a combination of two natural compounds commonly used as a dietary supplement. Curcumin is the primary polyphenolic compound found in turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) is derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree and is recognized for its potential cognitive-enhancing effects and ability to improve blood circulation. The combination has been studied primarily for neuroprotective effects, particularly in models of Alzheimer's disease, where it may enhance brain bioavailability of curcumin due to improved blood-brain barrier permeability provided by GBE[1][2]. Mechanistically, this combination may inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity, reduce amyloid beta accumulation and phosphorylated tau protein levels in the brain, decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β, lower oxidative stress markers like lipid peroxidation (MDA), and increase antioxidant defenses such as reduced glutathione (GSH)[1]. It is marketed mainly as a dietary supplement aimed at supporting cognitive function, memory, focus, joint health, inflammation balance, and overall wellness[2].
