Overview

Curcumin + saffron is a combination of two botanical extracts—curcumin (the primary active compound in turmeric, Curcuma longa) and saffron (derived from the stigmas of Crocus sativus). This combination has been studied primarily as a dietary supplement for its potential antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Clinical trials have shown that combined administration of low-dose curcumin (250 mg twice daily) with saffron (15 mg twice daily) over 12 weeks can significantly reduce symptoms of major depressive disorder and anxiety compared to placebo[1][3][6][7]. The mechanism is thought to involve multiple pathways: - Curcumin exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties; it may modulate neurotransmitter levels such as serotonin and dopamine. - Saffron appears to boost serotonin production, lower cortisol levels, preserve gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and also acts as an antioxidant[6]. The synergy between these botanicals may provide broader mood-regulating effects than either alone. Both are generally well-tolerated at studied doses.
