Curcumin-enhanced stem cell exosomes are extracellular vesicles (exosomes) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that have been pre-treated or loaded with curcumin, a natural polyphenol found in turmeric. This formulation is designed to combine the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties of both MSC-derived exosomes and curcumin. The mechanism involves enhanced delivery of curcumin via the exosome carrier system, improving its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. These engineered exosomes have demonstrated potential in reducing neuroinflammation, inhibiting tau protein phosphorylation (a key event in Alzheimer’s disease pathology), promoting neuronal survival, modulating microglial polarization toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype (M2), and improving cognitive function in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. Additional studies suggest benefits for other conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and adipogenic differentiation disorders[1][3][5]. The approach leverages the ability of MSC-exosomes to cross biological barriers and deliver bioactive molecules directly to target tissues[1][4].
