Overview

Curcumin-preconditioned autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are an experimental cellular therapy developed by the University of the Punjab for facial reconstructive surgery. This approach involves isolating ASCs from a patient's own adipose tissue, culturing them, and preconditioning them with curcumin—a bioactive polyphenol—prior to fat grafting. Curcumin preconditioning is intended to enhance the survival, proliferation, and pro-angiogenic potential of the stem cells by modulating oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways. When these enriched cells are co-administered with autologous fat grafts, they aim to improve graft volume retention and reduce resorption rates in patients with facial contour deformities such as Romberg disease, craniofacial microsomia, and various types of scarring.
