Overview

C-SSM (curcumin sterically stabilized micelles) is a nanomicellar formulation of curcumin encapsulated in sterically stabilized phospholipid micelles. Developed by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago, C-SSM is designed to overcome the poor aqueous solubility, instability, and low bioavailability of free curcumin. By encapsulating curcumin in PEGylated phospholipid micelles (such as DSPE-PEG), the formulation enhances the stability and cellular uptake of curcumin. C-SSM has been investigated in preclinical studies for its anti-cancer activity, particularly in targeting breast cancer and breast cancer stem cells (CSCs), where it inhibits tumorsphere formation and suppresses key self-renewal pathways.
