Overview

Curcumin sulfate is a sulfated metabolite of curcumin, the principal bioactive compound found in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Like its parent compound, curcumin sulfate exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It acts as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, and singlet oxygen, thereby inhibiting lipid peroxidation and peroxide-induced DNA damage[1][4]. Curcumin compounds modulate various signaling molecules involved in inflammation and carcinogenesis by suppressing key elements in cellular signal transduction pathways related to growth, differentiation, and malignant transformation[1]. There is evidence that the anti-inflammatory effects may be mediated through upregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) activation[6]. Curcumin metabolites like curcumin sulfate are being studied to better understand their contribution to the overall pharmacological effects observed with turmeric supplementation[6].
