Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Curcumin8 (also known as CUR5-8 or Curcumin 5-8) is a synthetic derivative and analog of curcumin, a natural polyphenol found in turmeric (Curcuma longa). Developed by researchers at Yonsei University and SoonCheonHyang University, Curcumin8 is designed to overcome the poor bioavailability and stability limitations of natural curcumin. It acts primarily as an activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and a regulator of autophagy. In preclinical models of high-fat diet-induced obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), Curcumin8 has demonstrated significant therapeutic potential by reducing body and liver weight gain, improving insulin sensitivity, decreasing hepatic triglyceride accumulation, and ameliorating liver steatosis. It also downregulates lipogenic factors such as SREBP1 and fatty acid synthase (FAS) while modulating apoptosis-related proteins like Bcl-2 and Bax.
