Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Custodiol HTK Solution is a high-flow, low-potassium preservation solution used for organ transplantation. It is intended for perfusion and flushing of donor kidneys, liver, pancreas, and heart prior to removal from the donor or immediately after removal. The solution remains in the organ vasculature during hypothermic storage and transportation to the recipient. Custodiol HTK works through two primary mechanisms: 1. Its electrolyte composition prevents triggering of energy-consuming activation processes, reducing organ energy requirements to the lowest possible level 2. The histidine/histidine HCl buffer system retards pH fall in tissues during organ ischemia, increasing anaerobic glycolytic energy production The solution is based on the principle of inactivating organ function by withdrawal of extracellular sodium and calcium, together with intensive buffering of the extracellular space. It has a composition similar to intracellular fluid with all components occurring naturally in the body. Custodiol HTK is attractive for cardiac surgeons because it is administered as a single dose and offers myocardial protection for up to three hours.
