CuTCPH is a carborane-containing copper porphyrin developed as a boron delivery agent for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). It is designed to selectively accumulate in tumor tissues, particularly malignant gliomas such as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The molecule incorporates multiple boron atoms via carborane clusters into a porphyrin scaffold, which naturally localizes in neoplastic tissues. Upon irradiation with thermal or epithermal neutrons, the Boron-10 atoms within the CuTCPH molecule capture neutrons and undergo a fission reaction, releasing high-energy alpha particles and lithium nuclei that destroy tumor cells locally while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Preclinical studies in rat and mouse models have demonstrated high boron uptake in intracranial and subcutaneous tumors with favorable tumor-to-brain and tumor-to-blood ratios.
